DOGWOOD DESIGN

A designers blog
My name is Maggie and this is a collection of design inspiration, doodles, and daily ramblings of a 20-something southern artist who is trying her best to lead a happy life filled with creativity.

All of the daily doodles and a lot of the photographs are by me but if not I always give credit to the source!

    You Who Are Getting Obliterated

I was out tonight walking my dog when I saw my very first fireflies of the season! I was instantly reminded of Yayoi Kusama’s fabulous 2005  ”You Who are Getting Obliterated in the Dancing Swarm of Fireflies” exhibition.

Here is a great description of the work:

“You enter a dark space with what appears to be hundreds of small LED pendent lights hung on black cables from the ceiling, and must determine how to walk to the exit.

It is the closest thing to being removed from your body.

The lights glow and change color, then fade out intermittently. The space creates an almost nauseating vertigo because, despite your best efforts, you cannot perceive depth or distance. The walls are mirrors, multiplying the lights several times over so that it feels endless, formless. And the floor is black and polished, somewhat reflective as well. It was just so stunning.”

Its not hard to see how one could be so inspired by the special wonder and magic that is fireflies.  Wouldn’t you just love to have a chance to walk through it all? I know I would.

    Happy Sunday!

    Tomboy Style

I think we all have a little bit of Tomboy spunk in us. I was definitely part of the tomboy club growing up. I wore my high-top black chucks with my little catholic school girl uniform for years while every one else was in their lace socks and patent leather Mary Janes.

There is certainly not a shortage of fashion minded blogs out there but, Tomboy Style is sophisticated, carefully edited and far and away my absolute favorite!  The Sartorialist  and Tomboy Style are always my go-to’s to find endless inspiring images.

Tomboy Style just came out with a book of the same name and I have not been able to put it down! Sooo much visual goodness and definitely one to check out.

    Life According to My Phone..

A little road trip,  some sunshine, the very best of friends and our own little slice of Carolina heaven. Talk about some serious soulshine to start the week off right.

Hope you have a Happy Sunday!

    Too good not to share…

So, I found this little gem today while going through some pictures on my old computer and kinda had to share… This is me (in a very, very bizarre voice - I swear thats not how I normally sound!) giving my Dad a tour of my miniscule (235 sq. ft) studio apartment in Chicago in 2008.

I had just graduated from college and had moved halfway across the country knowing only one person in my new city. I had no job for a while and having spent the previous 5 years in the deep south, absolutely no winter clothing (or funds to buy them).  I lived in this 3rd floor walk-up that was a complete fire trap. Thinking back with the knowledge I have now, I have no idea how it ever passed city residential building code!  I think I was delusional enough to believe it was very bohemian and artist-like of me to live in a ‘cozy’ little box in the big city. Actually, I’m pretty sure I am still that delusional..

Note to self: always film where you live.

Make me an Angel That Flies From Montgomery

I’ve been sketching a ton lately, which is a good change from my winter laziness… must be the warm weather and iced coffee runs!
